While Eagles’ A.J. Brown Is Approaching Record, This Part Of His Game Has Stood Out

A.J. Brown

PHILADELPHIA – Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown is far from retirement, yet he is being mentioned in the same company as Calvin Johnson, who is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Brown is in the middle of a stretch where he has had five straight games of eclipsing the 125-yard-plus receiving-yard mark. Johnson is the only player to achieve that feat since the 1970 AFL-NFL

This season, Brown has caught 52 passes for 809 yards and three touchdowns. Brown can break the record Sunday at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, when the Eagles take on the Washington Commanders.

“I’m working hard, and I’m doing the right things,” Brown said. “God has truly blessed me. Fortunately, I’m not really worried about it. I’m just trying to just go out and make the most of opportunities to play off of my teammates and try to get the win.”

In Week 4, Brown caught nine passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns, mostly against rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, who is now coming off the bench.

“It’s a change in cornerbacks, but these guys are going to play hard,” Brown said. “They know us, and we know them. That game went into overtime last time, and I’m expecting a heavyweight battle. I’m not going in there thinking we are just going to roll over on these guys. We have to execute on offense, play good on defense, and on special teams, too. All three phases. It’s a division game, so we do not take it lightly. We’re going to have to put our hard hat on.”

According to Pro Football Focus, of the wide receivers who have played a minimum of 105 run-blocking snaps, Brown has received the fourth-highest grade from the service behind D.J. Moore of the Chicago Bears, Josh Reynolds of the Detroit Lions, and Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers.

The blocking has helped seal the edge on outside runs, contributing to the Eagles placing fourth in the league in rushing offense (142.7 yards per game).

Head coach Nick Sirianni brought up those other factors when asked what had surprised him during his current receiving stretch.

“It gives me goosebumps to think about it as I’m talking about it right now,” Sirianni said. “It’s the things he’s doing that are unseen where other guys are getting the shine. He’s getting his opportunities as well, but that’s what impressed me.

From that last game, that’s what impressed me was about three or four plays of things that he did to help somebody else directly and how it changed the game with what he did. That speaks to why he has the ‘C’ on his chest and why he’s a captain of this team.
