Trugoy The Dove the lead rapper in the group De La Soul died this weekend. The rapper, whose real name is David Jude Jolicoeur, was just 54 years old.
In 2017, Trugoy openly discussed the effects of congestive heart failure on his health. In a 2017 video the rapper explains how he was forced to wear a “life vest” to keep him alive.
The video began with Trugoy in his home in suburban Maryland, where he talks about what it’s like living with a Life Vest while battling congestive heart failure. He describes the Life Vest as a machine that “will shock me, and hopefully bring me back from the matrix. I’m ready just to get back to the stage. I miss it. I love traveling; I love being around my guys. And I want that back.”
Trugoy, or “yogurt” spelled backward, was also known as Plug 2 and Dave —and one third of the group De La Soul, whose album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was released in 1989 on Tommy Boy, was a critical and commercial smash.
The album drew much scrutiny for its concept of the “D.A.I.S.Y. Age,” or “Da Inner Sound, Y’all,” a humanist sentiment that got the band unfairly labeled as hippies.
The group’s first six albums were kept off of streaming services for years over royalty disputes and sample clearance issues. The group asked their fans not to stream their music should it appear online, until a few weeks ago – when the sampling issues were resolved.
