“I was actually detoxing from drugs during the Grammys,” he said. “I was maybe three or four days off of opiates and it definitely was not out of my system whatsoever. So that place of fear was still there.
And I remember winning the four Grammys, and at the afterparty, got a pill from somebody. And that was the beginning of another attempt to escape everything that was happening.”
Macklemore caught heat for winning the Grammy over Kendrick Lamar.
Macklemore said he’s been sober now for two years.
“There’s so much work to be done. I’ve been in and out of the rooms of recovery for 14 years now, and I relapsed at the beginning of Covid,” he said. “So I have a couple years, but I still feel like a newcomer. I still feel like this is brand new and I’m just on the precipice of figuring out something that’s gonna open a new door.”
