Miles Sanders gave an honest answer after his Carolina Panthers Sunday loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Turns out Carolina Panthers fans weren’t trying to hear it.
Asked about the boos that rained down on his team during its 21-13 loss, the former Penn State star was direct.
“It’s not cool,” Sanders responded. “It’s not cool at all. Especially at home. It’s not a good feeling.”
Now, Sanders did spend the first couple years of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, and those fans will certainly let you know how they feel about things. But the Eagles were good for much of his run and made it to the Super Bowl last season.
The Panthers are now 0-4 and struggling.
Sanders, who signed a four-year, $25.4 million contract in the offseason, is struggling, too. He has run for just 158 yards on 54 carries. That included just 19 yards on 13 carries in the loss to the Vikings.
So, considering all of that and the fact that “fan” is short for “fanatic,” Panthers fans didn’t take too kindly with Sanders’ opinion of them voicing their displeasure.
“It’s not cool when you run 13 times for 19 yards,” one person responded to the video of his Sanders’ interview online.
“These guys need a publicist or something,” another person wrote. “The fans generate the money to pay you! Simple answer@ we need to play better!”
“What’s not cool is 1.3 yards a carry,” another person tweeted at Sanders. “Anything to say further.”
“The fans are booing because no one wants to see a run up the middle for 1 yards 20 times a game,” another person tweeted at Sanders.
And there was plenty more where that came from.
There were some who showed support for Sanders, though.
“To hear you even talk about or to (Miles Sanders) like this is crazy,” one person wrote in response to one of the fans bashing Sanders. “Did you check bros stats last year? Or was you sleep walking? Maybe give your offense some time to mesh before you start going after players not a good look big dawg.”
There’s a lot to unpack in the situation.
The Panthers are rebuilding with a rookie quarterback in Bryce Young. That doesn’t make it easy going for a running back, and it’s understandable that Sanders wouldn’t be appreciative of a lack of understanding from the fan base.
What’s certain is that Sanders, who ran for more than 1,200 yards last season for Philly, has the talent to help get it turned around.
But this is undoubtably not the start he or the fans imagined for his time in Charlotte.
