And according to one insider, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Lil Wayne was blocked form performing – because of “personality” and “political” issues.
The NFL announced yesterday that Kendrick Lamar will be performing at the championship game in New Orleans this February. And many hip hop fans were shocked by his choice.
Lil Wayne seemed the obvious choice for performing: he’s from New Orleans, has a ton of close celebrity friends who could join him on stage (like Drake, Nicki Minaj, and more), and has some of the hottest songs of the last 20 years.
And Lil Wayne has been publicly and privately advocating for himself to get the show.
But its been revealed that he was blocked from performing. The insider explained,
“The [NFL] has a group that helps determine which artist will perform at the Superbowl. [Jay Z] is on that team, but it’s not his decision solely.”
We asked why Lil Wayne wasn’t chosen. The insider told Media Take Out, “It was multiple reasons, first Wayne hasn’t been the most professional in the past. The Superbowl is a carefully choreographed event. In order to pull off the halftime show, everyone has to be complete professionals.“
But there were other reasons, that were at least as important, in denying Lil Wayne the opportunity of a lifetime.
The insider continue, “Lil Wayne also has the potential for substance abuse issues, and he has some unpopular political stances.”
While Media the insider did not say specifically which political stances that Lil Wayne had were “unpopular,” we suspect they were talking about Lil Wayne”s unflappable support for Donald Trump for president.
Lil Wayne was pardoned by Donald Trump in 2019. He faced 3 years in prison for weapons possession before the former president pardoned him.
Ever since the pardon, Wayne has been an ardent supporter of the controversial former president.
