One former Eagles running back is cutting down another former Philadelphia veteran.
LeSean McCoy took aim at Eric Bieniemy on Monday while appearing on FS1′s “Speak.”
McCoy was asked about Bieinemy being named Washington Commanders offensive coordinator and assistant head coach after being passed over yet again on the head coach carousel.
Bieniemy, after all, won a pair of Super Bowl titles as Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and helped develop quarterback Patrick Mahomes into a two-time NFL MVP.
But according to TMZ, McCoy doesn’t believe in Bieinemy, who played for the Eagles in 1999, because head coach Andy Reid was calling the plays.
He … claimed Bieniemy had “nothing to do with the pass game at all. … What’s his value?” McCoy asked of Bieniemy. “What makes him a good coordinator?”
McCoy was asked if Bieniemy being Black had anything to do with him getting passed over as a head coach candidate.
“People want to win,” McCoy said. “The color thing, I get it. There should be more Black coaches. I definitely believe that … They want to win. It has nothing to do with the color barrier at all. … I love to see Black coaches win. Also, he’s a running backs coach. Running back coaches don’t never get a chance to be offensive coordinators. I want that to do well for him.”
McCoy tweeted a clip of his appearance on the show with the following caption: “I wish him WELL but Washington don’t let the chiefs SUCCESS or coaching titles fool y’all… the traits or skills you need to be a good coordinator I haven’t seen or WITNESSED it …”
It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time McCoy cut down Bieniemy, doing so last spring as well. Per the New York Post:
“There’s a reason why every year they keep hyping him up to get a head coaching job, or an offensive coordinator job somewhere else, and he don’t get one. He talks to players a certain way, and some players would take it. I wouldn’t take it. There’s some questions I’m gonna ask. Everyone’s accountable. It’s not because he’s a black coach [that he’s not getting hired]. That’s not the reason. … No one hires him because they know what type of coach he really is.”
This time around, several former Chiefs stars came to Bieinemy’s defense, according to TMZ.
Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs’ all-time leading rusher, addressed McCoy directly on Twitter. “I have to disagree with you Shady,” Charles wrote. “Bieniemy Coach me 4 years I learned so many thing for EB and I still keep in contact with him a great husband and father. He deserves to be a head coach.”
“Man you f****d up with it,” former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said in a tweet directed to McCoy.
“Shady mad Eb told him tuck that ball,” Tyreek Hill wrote.
McCoy spent one season on the Chiefs with Bieniemy. In 2019, McCoy played in 13 games for Kansas City, running for 465 yards and four touchdowns. For his effort, McCoy picked up a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs beating the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, in Super Bowl LIV.
McCoy added a second ring the next season, his last in the NFL, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 34-year-old McCoy was a second-round pick of the Eagles in 2009, when Reid was still head coach. McCoy spent six seasons in Philadelphia, followed by four years with the Buffalo Bills.
McCoy was a six-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro. He ran for 11,102 yards, 6,792 of which came with the Eagles, making him Philadelphia’s alltime leading rusher.
