Eagles’ Jalen Hurts on Potential New Contract: ‘Only Thing I Care About Is Winning’

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said he’s focused on winning championships after fielding a question about a potential new contract Tuesday.

“There will be a day where that conversation can be had, but today isn’t that day,” Hurts said regarding contract talks.

Hurts enjoyed a breakout season in his second full year as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. The former Alabama and Oklahoma star completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 22 touchdowns (six interceptions) and 3,701 yards alongside 760 rushing yards and 13 scores.

Including the postseason, the Eagles went 16-2 in his starts. They cruised through the NFC playoffs, outscoring the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers 69-14.

Philadelphia then fell 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl despite Hurts’ four touchdowns (three rushing, one passing) and 374 yards (304 passing, 70 rushing).

The 24-year-old Hurts, who the Eagles selected in the second round of the 2020 draft, just finished the third year of his four-season rookie contract. He has a base salary of $4.2 million and a prorated bonus of $485,486 for the 2023 season, per Over the Cap.

Naturally, Hurts is worth a lot more than that after his tremendous 2022 season, which also featured the signal-caller earning MVP finalist honors. And the Eagles are clearly on board with keeping him around long term.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio (h/t Joel Corry of CBS Sports) that Hurts has “nothing to prove” and that “he’s just what we’re looking for.”

Naturally, the Eagles would want to get something done long term with Hurts before his rookie contract expires. There’s plenty of time to get that settled, of course, but Hurts is clearly the answer in Philadelphia. The electric quarterback was tremendous this past season and should keep Philadelphia in playoff contention for years.

For now, the Eagles have other pressing matters to attend to, such as finding replacements for a pair of departed coordinators in Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon, who are now the head coaches of the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals, respectively.

But Hurts’ contract is on the agenda as the Eagles look to move forward following a tough Super Bowl loss.
