Calling His Shots: Cam Newton Reveals How Much It Would Cost Jets To Add Him To Their Roster

Zach Wilson discusses the growth he felt he made

If the Jets ever came calling for Cam Newton, the quarterback has a number of questions for the organization before he would ever sign a contract with them.

Newton revealed on Thursday what he would want on the “RG3 and The Ones” podcast with former NFL QB and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin

Before he listens to any potential offer, Newton said that he would have to be compensated fairly high to make anything work.

“You not about to sit here and penny pinch me, bro,” Newton said. “I’m about to sit up here and sign no $5.5 (million) deal, bro.

“Those days are over with. I’d be wasting my time,” Newton said. “Because I will tell you if you don’t think I could be on a roster right now I could. But it’s bigger than that to me. Am I in shape right now? Hell yeah.”

There have been plenty of questions surrounding what the Jets will do regarding their current quarterback situation, as the team has gone 1-3 after Aaron Rodgers went down.

Zach Wilson turned plenty of heads with his performance in Sunday night’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, when he threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

The struggling signal-caller had one of his best games in a Jets uniform to date, which has seemed to quiet some of the skeptics for the time being.

Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP, said if he were to ever get a call from the Jets to come join them, the former Panther and Patriot would have a lot of things he would need to know.

“In any situation, I’m gonna sit up there and I’m gonna analyze it as much as possible,” he said. “I don’t want to walk into a dysfunctional situation. Have you guys made Zach Wilson aware? Also, Aaron Rodgers is trying to come back this year, let’s also talk about that.

“So when he comes back is it just gonna be something that you just say, ‘Ay watch out.’ So it’s a lot of things that I don’t just make impulse decisions.”

Newton hasn’t played in the NFL since 2021 when he appeared in eight games — five starts — with the Panthers.

He threw four touchdowns and five interceptions that year and held a 64.4 quarterback rating.

For his part Griffin still felt that Newton could play in the league.

“Cam Newton should still be playing in the NFL. PERIOD,” Griffin wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

For now, the Jets are sticking with Wilson going into Sunday’s grudge match against the Broncos.
